     Love it or hate it, laundry is a big part of our lives (and let’s be honest, unless you are Monica Geller, you probably don’t love it). This is true for all of us, but if you are a mom with young kids or kids in sports you’ve come to know a whole new level of laundry fatigue. Doesn’t it sometimes feel like it literally grows out of the kid’s bedroom floor? Ever find yourself thinking, “Hey kid, how many shirts do you need to wear in one day”?
With laundry being such a large part of our lives, we think the room that hosts this lovely chore is in desperate need of some TLC. Laundry room design has come a long way in recent years.

We’ve chosen 5 fun laundry room design trends that will make even doing the laundry seem like more of an escape than a chore.

COLOR

The first tip is to choose a color palette that will inspire you! Maybe that is a fresh, airy palette with a calming and peaceful feel or a bright bold or patterned palette that shouts “let’s do this thing!” or somewhere in between. Choosing your colors will quite literally set the tone in the space. Choose colors that you love so that you will enjoy being in the room. And don’t be afraid of pattern, whether that is tile, wallpaper or even a fun mural. The idea is to love the look and feel of the room.

FUN AND FUNCTIONAL FLOORING

This fits right in with your color palette and can even work as a great statement in the room. There are so many amazing flooring options on the market now that fit any style or budget! From vinyl to hardwood, concrete to tile, you are sure to find something that makes your laundry room just as beautiful as it is functional! One of the big trends we are loving is patterned or uniquely shaped tile. This option makes a wonderful design statement while being easy to clean and maintain.

A LARGE WORKSPACE

Beautiful countertops are a must! We love counters that fit over your washer and dryer to make the best use of the space and serve as the perfect place to sort, fold or get those pesky grass stains out of your kid’s football uniform. Having space to spread out the work and add some fun decor pieces is a great way to make a room more appealing.

Have laundry that needs to be hand washed or pre-rinsed? Instead of tracking wet clothes through the house from the bathroom or kitchen sink, just add a sink into your laundry room! This is a very popular element in laundry room design right now, especially if the space doubles as your mudroom.

One more functional workspace element we love is adding a built-in ironing board or drying rack that is easily hidden or retracted to the wall or cabinets when unused. This is such a space saver and a wonderfully practical idea.

STORAGE

Along with counter space, storage space is a must! Adding beautiful cabinets not only elevates the beauty of the room, but it also elevates the practicality of the room. Adding special cabinet space designed specifically for laundry bins and laundry products is a great way to make the most of your space!

PAMPER YOUR PET

If you have pets, the laundry room is the perfect room to create a space to pamper them. We are seeing a trend of adding built-in feeding stations, kennels, and even dog baths! What a perfect way to spoil your furry friends!

One of our greatest joys as a company is when we have the opportunity to give back to our community. We believe that we are blessed to be a blessing, and we want to reach out and be a helping hand to those in need. This year we partnered with Need-A-Break for their Good Neighbor Day.

 

Need-A-Break Services is a nonprofit, faith-based foundation that is devoted to helping people succeed through meeting needs in our community and motivating others to serve their neighbors. You can learn more about them and how you can help at www.needabreak.org.

It was such a joy to reach out and help a family, doing exactly what we do best… construction! The family’s home was falling into disrepair, and our employees worked so hard to make sure that they were well taken care of. We even brought our families out to help (including a few of George’s grandkids)! We redid the siding on 2 sides of the home, painted and fixed the deck.

Serving is one of our core values here at renewal and something that we are so passionate about. We know that when we give back, we are so blessed by the experience. We encourage you to team up with a local charity in the community and start giving back! We know that you will gain even more than you give in the process!

We are very excited about our upcoming trip to Mexico with Homes of Hope! We will be partnering with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) to build a house for a family in need.

It’s no secret that being outside is good for body and soul. The air is fresh, the sky is clear… who are we kidding, this is the Pacific Northwest, the sky is most likely grey. But it’s invigorating nonetheless and scientists and doctors alike tell us the amazing benefits of spending time in the great outdoors. And the outdoors really is great around here! Nature is also an amazing source of peace and creative inspiration. Unfortunately, the reality is that our fast-paced lives usually keep us indoor more than we would like (and maybe more than is good for us).

 

 

Thankfully, it is possible to bring a little bit of the outdoors home, while adding color and classic décor to your house. I think the best way to do this is through houseplants! There are so many benefits to having houseplants. They clean the air, help prevent you from getting sick, are natural air fresheners and humidifiers, and can even improve mental health! This is all beside the point that they are a chic and dare I say, inexpensive, way to decorate your home.

Ok, I know half of you are thinking “but I don’t have a green thumb, I could never keep a plant alive…” I used to think this myself until I was gifted a Peace Lily and realized how easy most plants actually are to keep alive. Now, 11 years later, my house is full of lovely plants (including that same Peace Lily) that bring great health benefits to my family and so much joy to my creative, nature-loving heart!

Just go for it!

Most plants are so forgiving and tell you when they need water (drooping, soft or discolored leaves). And if you buy from your local nursery, they are sure to have some experts who can advise you on what ones like shade, which ones prefer sun and how much water they need. Don’t worry if you forget or have more questions, just search Pinterest (I credit the health of most of my plants to Pinterest).

So now that you are convinced, here is a list of my favorite houseplants. Don’t worry they are all great beginner plants!

Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

Not only is the Fiddle Leaf lovely, but it can also grow to be quite large which can make a big statement in a room (and provide a bit more heath promoting power).

Rubber Tree

These can be found in both dark green and pastel green shades, which make them fun for decorating!

Snake Plant

This plant is almost indestructible and it’s tall leaves make a bold statement.

Split Leaf Philodendron

Besides the Fig Tree, this might be the most popular plant on Pinterest and for good reason! These are so beautiful and they grow fast and are easy to care for. This is my personal favorite at home!

Peace Lily

These plants are lovely and full. They occasionally produce white flowers and always live up to their name.

The best way to pick out plants is to know ahead of time where you would like to put them in your home. Assess how much light is available there and then visit your local nursery to find your favorites! And above all, have fun! Plants are supposed to make you happy after all!

The annual NW Natural Street of Dreams was held in Hillsboro, Oregon this year and featured six new luxury homes created by five different designers. Members of Renewal’s Design and Sales teams go to this event every year to see these cutting edge designs and gain some inspiration.

 

During our Street of Dreams visit, the Private Reserve house by BC Custom Construction was one that really caught my eye. I loved the use of fun and bold wallpaper designs! The use of wallpaper is resurfacing and this home had a lot of fantastic ideas on how to incorporate wallpaper to generate an exciting and unique look in any room.

We’re going back to black with this next trend. Similar to the ‘little black dress’, the crisp, sleek finish of matte black fixtures offers a dramatic look in kitchens and bathrooms.

Not only are these fixtures more practical because they don’t reveal all the fingerprints and grime that lighter metals can, but it fits with traditional, modern, and every style in between.

 

Maximalism

For the past several years, minimalism has been the dominant trend, but the days of “less is more” may be nearing an end. Taking its place – Maximalism! Think vibrant hues and wild wallpaper instead of shades of white and grey. Maximalist design has no fear of eclectic combinations, mixing vibrant colors, competing styles, and layering patterns. Bright cabinets and differing tile patterns create a sense of “organized chaos” that allows one to play with prints and colors to showcase personality and different tastes in one space.
