Love your home but looking to spruce it up? There are five areas of your home that you can improve easily and effortlessly that will increase the comfort and add character to your home. A house becomes a home when it reflects the owners and identifies your tastes, hobbies, experiences and welcomes you home at the end of the day.

Lighting:

Choose spaces in your home to accentuate with lightning to create a comfortable, warm room. We recommend evaluating your home and selecting areas that are dark, have a piece of artwork displayed or underneath cabinets to add lighting; or start by updating existing lighting fixtures such as chandeliers.

Inviting Entry Way:

Your entry way welcomes you and your guests into your home and is one of the first impressions of your space. When decorating an entry way, you want an organized space that is comfortable and inviting. Try adding storage for keys, jackets, shoes and other items to prevent clutter from building up; install pegs or shelves with bins to create a practical yet pretty entry way. When decorating the entry way remember to include seating for guests to use when removing shoes or to place an item.

Enhancing Exterior:

Add character to the exterior of your home by adding architectural details to add charm and make your home unique. When decorating try adding shutters, painting the trim, installing window boxes or planters and add exterior lighting to enhance landscape details.

Accessorize:

Add personal touches to your space by accessorizing with vintage finds, trip souvenirs, seasonal touches, heirloom items, and items that fleet your family. When decorating remember to add accessories in moderation, to prevent an area from looking clutter and overwhelming.

Add Extra Elements:

Add touches of character to your space by creating interesting nooks and finishes to ordinary and dull rooms. Try creating a reading nook near a window, or architectural details such as molding, or carved legs to cabinets. If you can’t afford to replace items try repainting for a fresh look and install new hardware.

Painting the background of your cabinets

Want simple ways to add character and creativity to your home but don’t have a lot of time or experience? Well these days it’s easier than ever to learn how to master DIY projects in little or no time! We have found a few projects assembled by Better Homes and Gardens that we think you should give a try!

Artistic Assemblage

Have some unused fabric lying around the house but you don’t think there’s enough to do anything with? Use it in a beautiful way by covering shoe box lids or artists canvases. Fabric can be attached simply by using staples or fabric glue then hung on the wall!

Create an Accent Wall

Painting an accent wall is one of the easiest and most effective ways to add a burst of character to any room in your home. It only takes a few hours and depending on the size of the wall, only a single can of paint!

Easy & Beautiful Coffee Table

Creating a table is as easy as 1-2-3, with beautiful results! Using 2 wooden shipping pallets (painted or not), stack them on top of each other and combine using wooden screws. To get a flat surface, cut a base to size using medium density fiberboard and screw to the top of the pallets. For additional flare, you can add a piece of your favorite fabric to the top!

Easy Custom Curtains

Never pay for expensive window décor again! You can easily make fabulous curtains yourself with just a few easy steps! Using the fabric of your choice, first cut a full sheet in half, and then hem along the edges. Add your own flare by placing a different design on the bottom and colored fabric loops on top.

Don’t ever buy fresh herbs from the grocery store again because there is nothing more organic or authentic than growing them right in your kitchen. If you are remodeling your kitchen consider having a a small herb garden integrated right into your counter top. A great location for plants is near a window that provides ample amounts of sunlight and that is convenient when cooking. These common herbs are must haves for every kitchen.

Suggested Herbs

  1. basil
  2. sage
  3. oregano
  4. common thyme
  5. lavender
  6. rosemary
  7. parsley
  8. chives
  9. cilantro
  10. mint

Once you  have picked your combination of herbs purchase quality potting soil, small pots of your choice or one large trough, and plant the herbs. Make sure not to over water your herb garden and that it is located in a spot that receives around six hours of sunlight daily.
